Iron Gates

The western entrance to the palace

So called ”human eater” was the architectural structure of  the double gate protection, in order to close the enemy in between inter and outer gates.  During the medieval period within the propugnaculum of the Iron gates, existed  a kind of an open air court room for the minor criminals. The medieval time tales do not stop here.

It is enough to look up and on the top of the gates you will see the oldest tower bell still existing in the palace, dating from the 10th century. It is the last surviving, among the four built on the top of each gates, that, according to a legend, for a long time served as the pilgrimage place for the pregnant women, who, in order to keep their pregnancy safe  climbed up to lit a candle.
