The only existing theatre in the city, named after the famous Dubrovnik born comedy writer of the Renaissance period, the Marin Držić Theater is housed in the building dating from 1865. Although the auditorium is rather small, it has staged many extraordinary performances and it has been active as a professional theater since 1944.
Inside the theater, the painted ceiling is the work of famous painter Vlaho Bukovac (1855 – 1922) which he painted in 1901. The theme of the painting is dual coronation – coronation of Heaven and Earth. Today’ ceremonial curtain in the theater was painted in 1986 by the contemporary artist Franko Delale.
